Can you tell our readers about your background?
I am a first-generation immigrant and the first female in my family to graduate from college. I’ve been fortunate to be employed in the immigration field since 1993—with the federal government as an Immigration Inspector and Trial Attorney, at a leading University, as an Immigration Attorney, at the largest corporate law firm in Buffalo and finally as the Founder and Managing Partner of Berardi Immigration Law. I am a wife. A mom to my sweet teenager, Salvatore. An entrepreneur. And a Disney fanatic.
What inspired you to start your business?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My father immigrated from Italy in 1954. He was an orphan and didn’t speak English. In 1964, he married my mother and moved to the U.S. They opened a hair salon with no business knowledge. It was successful for 45 years. My brother is a Dentist and is also an entrepreneur and has managed his dental practice for over 25 years.

Buffalo, New York—we are located 20 minutes from the U.S./Canadian border
How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?
I started my law firm out of the guest room of our apartment. I had a computer, bought a printer and had one client.
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?
Building relationships. Whether it’s visiting law firms in Canada or attending a networking event, the best business I’ve received comes from establishing solid relationships with people.
What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?
When I started my law firm in 2005, I knew how to be an Immigration Lawyer. I didn’t know anything about business! It was a steep learning curve, as I had to understand the tax system, HR issues, and financial statements. I educated myself and joined a local Women’s Business Center and the University of Buffalo’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. I took courses on Business Finances, Marketing, and HR issues. That education has been priceless!
How do you stay focused?
Lists and goals. Every day I write a list of three things that must get done. Every quarter, my team and I set quarterly goals—one thing we want to learn/improve/create over a 12-week-period. We have quarterly check-in meetings once a month and it’s amazing all the things we’ve accomplished!
How do you differentiate your business from the competition?
We practice ethically and have a unique culture. We don’t take every case that comes to the firm; we only accept cases that are approvable. We also have a happy law firm team, which is unusual in my industry. My lawyers aren’t required to keep billable hours (tracking their day in six-minute instruments), which makes them very happy.
What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?
Our best source of business is from existing clients. When we do our job and forge a strong connection with our clients, they become our best salespeople.

Favorite app: Facebook. It’s an easy way to stay in touch with friends and family.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?
QuickBooks. It makes billing and invoicing simple and easy.
Who is your business role model? Why?
Gary Vaynerchuk. He’s a self-made business guru who failed out of school and created a media empire.
What is your beauty routine? What are some of your favorite products?
I am a freak about my skin. I’m obsessed with Eminence Skin Care products and use moisturizer, toner, and masques.
How do you balance work and life?
By carving out time with friends and family. I love going to the theater and live concerts.
What’s your favorite way to decompress?
Getting a facial and a massage.
What do you have planned for the next six months?
A trip to Disney and launching a new business!!
