Can you tell our readers about your background?

I was born and raised in Rochester, NY. I attended Nazareth University, where I earned degrees in Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education, Special Education, and a BA in Psychology. After completing my undergraduate studies, I went on to graduate school at Nazareth, where I pursued a degree in Literacy Education while also working full-time as a teacher.

I taught first grade for seven years before transitioning into my dream role as a literacy specialist, a position I’ve held for the past few years. Outside of teaching, I create TikTok content primarily for women navigating their single life journeys, helping them find joy, peace, and empowerment. This is part of my business, and I also create merchandise featuring some of my most viral TikTok quotes.

In addition, I run a multifaceted business where I serve as a Reiki practitioner and an IFS-informed coach. I also offer reading support and tutoring services. Throughout my career, I’ve always worked in caring professions, where my natural gifts have flourished. It’s been both fun and challenging to evolve in this journey.

What inspired you to start your business?

I started posting on TikTok in April 2024 during a time when I was feeling completely drained and struggling to find light in my life. I was weighed down by people’s expectations, and it felt incredibly heavy. Navigating the dating world again after a very painful breakup, I created a dating scale, which became an essential tool. Over time, I realized that intentionality was key – I needed to choose where my energy was going and decide what was truly worth my time and light. That dating scale became much more than just a tool; you can actually get it for free on my website! I use it to cross-examine my gut feelings with my rational thoughts—asking myself how I feel about a situation and how others are making me feel. It took me 30 years to realize that I wasn’t the problem.

That spring, I was encouraged to enroll in a Reiki training program, and I instantly fell in love with the healing power of Reiki. I don’t take it lightly—literally and figuratively! Inspired by incredible women and female entrepreneurs, I officially started my own business. Eventually, I began offering Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed coaching to my Reiki clients.

As my TikTok page gained momentum, I built a wonderfully positive community of single women from all walks of life, navigating the highs and lows of this journey. Some of them are looking to find their person, while others are perfectly content on their own. I share personal learnings, vulnerability, and a mix of laughs and tears along the way. I often think back to my darkest times, and I remember how the people who made me laugh and say “me too” became my tribe. So, seeing people connect with me through the screen and wearing my viral quotes and merch means more to me than words can express. It’s a full-circle moment—being a girl's girl.

Where is your business based?

My business, Sunshine and Rainbows Inc., operates both virtually and in-person, with a primary base in Rochester, NY. Currently, I rent space for my Reiki and coaching sessions, providing a peaceful and welcoming environment for healing. My ultimate dream is to have my own space that encompasses all aspects of my business. I envision a location near the Erie Canal in Rochester, where clients can experience Reiki, IFS-informed coaching, and other services I offer. This space would also feature a small shop showcasing my merch and other favorite brands I love and support—bringing together the healing aspects of my work and my creative entrepreneurial endeavors under one roof.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I started my business slowly, taking one step at a time. If you’re comfortable being in the public eye or even just curious about it, I’d recommend giving it a try—you might discover you have a natural knack for it. For me, TikTok was the first step in launching my business. Another crucial step was listening to where life was guiding me. I never would’ve thought about getting Reiki trained, but being a deeply intuitive, sensitive, and emotionally connected person, it turned out to be the perfect fit. My Reiki master saw potential in me that I didn’t even recognize, and I answered the call. Sometimes, the best ideas don’t come from yourself—they come from unexpected places. I learned to step out of my comfort zone and be willing to try something new. Most importantly, I focused on being my own best friend and creating a safe space within myself. This foundation allowed me to move forward and build the business I have today.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

I value connections, and that’s how I’ve grown my business. No fancy marketing team needed when the answer is just you—the real, authentic version of yourself. I’ve always believed that if you’re good at what you do and genuinely care about your clients, the rest will follow. Most of my clients have come through personal connections—one person tells another, and that’s how I’ve built trust and relationships over time. Authenticity is key.

TikTok has also played a huge role in raising awareness for my business. It’s an interactive platform where I’ve been able to connect deeply with people. It’s not about gaining followers; it’s about creating a community. Through my content, I’ve formed meaningful relationships with people who aren’t just virtual followers but also friends. I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s the truth. The support and engagement I receive from my TikTok community have been invaluable, and it’s been so rewarding to see my business grow. Ultimately, it all comes down to the relationships you foster, and I’m grateful for the incredible people I’ve met along the way.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

Being a business owner and content creator has been a completely new dream for me, and stepping into that role has required a lot of growth. Along the way, I had to grieve my old life, set boundaries with the people I loved, and let go of the things that no longer served me. The past two years have brought so many incredibly difficult experiences that, at times, felt unbearable. What’s hardest is that when people hear some of my stories, they often say, “I never would’ve known.” It’s tough because no one truly knows the weight you carry when you carry it so well.

Through it all, I’ve learned that the best thing you can do for yourself is to find the right people—those who genuinely love you, support you, and want to see you shine. A solid support system is absolutely essential. The real turning point for me came when I started saying “no” to the wrong people. It was so hard at first, but once I made space by removing the negative influences, I allowed the right people to come in. Maybe it’s bad advice, but for me, it was necessary: burn your life down. I mean, burn it to the ground. Let the people who don't understand or support you fear the change. Put that resilience on your resume, because it’s something you won’t be used to—but it’ll change you for the better.

Feel your feelings—go to therapy, cry, miss them, but always get back up. Remember your purpose, even when it feels distant. Build that emotional resilience and truly believe in your core that you are here to do great things, even when others can’t see it. And sometimes, even when you can’t see it. Make room for the right people to come into your life—those who will remind you of your worth when you forget. Your support system is everything, and having the right people around you can make all the difference in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.

How do you stay focused?

Staying focused for me is all about following what brings me joy. Interestingly, sometimes that means finding fulfillment in the more mundane tasks. For example, weeding heat transfer vinyl to create my merch isn’t something I would say I’m passionate about, but knowing that a phrase like “A catch that can’t be caught” resonates deeply with over 500,000 people gives it a greater sense of purpose. It’s these little things, even the tasks that aren’t glamorous, that connect me to my bigger purpose.

I am driven by what aligns with that purpose, and that feeling runs deep in my bones. When something feels like a "heck yes," it’s easy for me to stay focused because I can put my whole heart into it. I truly can’t dedicate myself to something I don’t believe in, so I’m lucky that focusing on the things I love and that align with my mission comes naturally. Now, laundry...that’s a different story! But when it comes to my business and my passion, focusing on what truly matters to me is something that flows fairly effortlessly.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I differentiate my business from the competition by simply being me. There is no one else who can bring the unique combination of who I am, what I believe in, and how I connect with others. I don’t listen to the people who tell me to “pick a lane.” That approach doesn’t work for me—it stifles my creativity and my ability to explore all aspects of who I am. Once I embraced the idea of flowing with my business and incorporating things that were truly authentic to me, I saw it flourish in ways I hadn’t expected.

By staying true to my own vision and doing what feels right for me, my business naturally became more aligned with who I am, and that resonated with people. When you’re authentic, it just feels good, and people can sense that energy. It’s not about trying to fit into a mold or follow someone else's blueprint—it’s about embracing what makes you unique, and that’s what sets me apart from the competition.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

My most effective marketing strategy has been a combination of TikTok, Instagram, word of mouth, and simply sticking with it—even when growth doesn’t happen as quickly as I’d like. TikTok and Instagram have been key platforms for reaching people and creating engagement, but what’s really helped me grow is staying consistent and being true to myself. Letting my personality shine through in everything I do—whether it’s content or customer interactions—has been incredibly powerful. People connect with authenticity, and when you let your true self come through, your work naturally speaks for itself. Word of mouth has also played a huge role, as happy clients share their experiences with others, building trust and expanding my reach in ways no ad campaign ever could. All of these elements together have created a solid foundation for organic growth.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

My best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs is this: People are going to think you’re crazy—and there will be times when you’ll think you’re crazy too. Starting a business is all about trying something brand new, and it’s not always easy. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks, but know that the journey will test your mental toughness. It’s not for the faint of heart, and there will be challenges along the way. But trust me, you can do it. Stay focused, embrace the uncertainty, and keep pushing forward. The most rewarding successes often come from stepping outside your comfort zone. I just can’t imagine still being stuck in that life that was draining me two years ago, and that realization is a reminder of how far you can go when you choose to push through the tough times.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

My favorite app is definitely TikTok. It’s where I’ve found so many amazing women who inspire me, like Alex Cooper, Eli Rallo, Madison Humphrey, Elyce Myers, and Mads Mitch. I love how I can share my own journey while learning from others. I also can’t get enough of the "We Can Do Hard Things" podcast with Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach, and sister Amanda Doyle. Being from Rochester, the local connection to Abby feels like it adds a whole new layer to their podcast for me. It honestly feels like I’m friends with them, especially with the ties to Abby. The way they deliver information, own their stuff, grow together, challenge each other, and support one another is nothing short of inspirational. It’s one of my dreams to be on their podcast someday!

As for books, Brené Brown is a huge inspiration—her work on vulnerability and authenticity really guides me in both my personal life and my coaching practice. She taught me not to take criticism from people who aren’t in the ring getting their butt kicked with you, and how to have compassion for myself in feeling my feelings without judgment. Her insights have been game-changers for both me and my clients. I also love Dick Schwartz's IFS books—they’ve totally shifted the way I approach healing. His work inspires everything that I do. I'm such an IFS nerd—it’s ridiculous! I have quite an imagination, so when I can actually picture myself tending to my wounded parts, you have no idea how transformative that has been. It changed my life especially during this tough past few years, and changes the lives of my clients too.

I’m a total bookworm, and I’m always learning something new, whether it’s psychology or how to throw a epic dinner party. And then there’s Emily Henry—her rom-com novels are just the perfect escape after a busy day. My interests are pretty diverse, just like my business. I also acknowledge that most of the creators I follow are white women, and while they’ve inspired me immensely, I’m also making an effort to follow and learn from more diverse voices. I want my perspective and the community I build to be as diverse as possible.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

My favorite business tools are Square Space and Canva. Canva has been a go-to tool for me since my days as a teacher. A blank canvas with endless fonts and colors is like heaven for me—it really sparks creativity! As for Square Space, I initially tried using a different company for my website, email, phone services, etc., and it was a nightmare. Life basically told me, “NOPE.” After making the switch to Square Space for both my contacts and business operations, I’ve never looked back. Their customer service has been amazing—patient with all my "newbie" questions. I promise, I’m not sponsored, but I’m genuinely enthusiastic about how much easier it has made my life! It really simplifies everything.

Who is your business role model? Why?

I wouldn’t necessarily call them "business role models," but honestly, it’s my friends. My tribe. My girls. I believe your business can only be as strong as you are when you're the brand—especially when you're client-facing and creating content. These women keep me going, lift me up, and provide me with real, constructive feedback. Everyone is an expert in their own way, and they’ve been so generous in sharing their wisdom and genius with me. How lucky am I? I remind myself every day that I’m worthy of respect, and look what life gave me—the best friends a girl could ask for.

How do you balance work and life?

Balancing work and life is something I’ve had to learn the hard way. Life has a way of pushing you to your limits, and after experiencing burnout, I realized the importance of setting boundaries and being intentional with my time and energy. I now approach opportunities, relationships, and interests with this mindset: I can’t go back to how I felt two years ago, so is this worth my energy right now?

Living with intention and being honest with myself has become one of the bravest choices I make. It’s not always easy, especially when others might not understand or appreciate it, but it’s essential for my well-being. Being true to what’s important to me—whether it’s carving out time for rest or investing energy in relationships that align with my values—has been life-changing. The key is being honest with yourself and making choices that support your mental and emotional health. Ultimately, it’s about knowing that I can’t go back to that unbalanced lifestyle, so I constantly ask myself if what I’m doing is really worth my energy at this moment.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

My favorite way to decompress is when I have more time, I love sitting outside, taking a walk, or spending time playing with my pups. I also enjoy having dinner or drinks with friends, watching a good show or movie, and diving into DIY house projects or crafting. One of my favorite hobbies is throwing on the pottery wheel—I actually have a wheel set up in my basement, and it’s such a peaceful way to unwind.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, though, staying rested and hydrated is essential for me. Even when life gets hectic, I make sure to step away from work for a few minutes to check in with myself, stretch, or move my body. It’s those small moments of pause that help me reset and stay balanced.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

The last two years have been pure chaos for me—it has led me to a lot of good things, but still, chaos nonetheless! As I move forward, I plan to continue growing my work and business while also tackling some house projects. I’ve lived in my house for almost five years now, and while it’s been renovated and decorated, as a single woman, I’m now adding more of my personal feminine touches to make it feel even more like home.

As a teacher, my summer vacation will likely be filled with lots of business ventures and new ideas, but I’m also looking forward to taking time to relax, unwind, and enjoy being outdoors with my pups, Winnie (7) and Nova (1). It’s going to be a balance of productivity and self-care.
