FemFounder Tested: The Black Leather Tote I’m Carrying All Fall
I’ve found my bag for fall—and it isn’t covered in logos or designed to sit untouched in a closet. The Moss Bags Large Classic Tote is the kind of understated luxury I actually want to carry.
Some bags you buy because they’re having a moment; others become part of your life. This fall, mine is the black leather Large Classic Tote from Moss Bags.
I’ve always gravitated toward pieces that feel polished without looking overly considered, and this bag hits that balance particularly well. It’s simple: beautiful black leather, black straps, subtle brass hardware, and a classic silhouette. No oversized logo announces itself from across the room. It doesn’t need one.
What makes it feel luxurious to me is the material and construction. Moss makes the tote from a single piece of full-grain leather, and each bag is handcrafted and made to order in Bellingham, Washington. Because the leather is natural, every bag develops its own variations in texture and character rather than looking completely uniform.
The Size Is Part of the Appeal
I like a beautiful small handbag as much as anyone, but my everyday life requires something considerably more useful.
The Large Classic Tote measures 18 inches across the top, 15 inches across the bottom, 13 inches high, and five inches deep. There’s an interior pocket and a key clip, and the straps have an 11-inch drop. In other words, it is a real tote.
It has room for the things that follow me through a workday without turning into an enormous carryall. A laptop can go in. A notebook can go in. The assortment of chargers, sunglasses, beauty products, and miscellaneous things I inevitably accumulate fits, too.
And it still looks polished.
That distinction matters. A work bag can be extremely practical and somehow make an outfit look more practical, too. This one doesn’t.
Why Black for Fall
Something about September makes me want to edit everything.
The lighter, more casual pieces of summer start disappearing, and I find myself looking for black, cream, chocolate brown, denim, good knits, and pieces that make getting dressed feel uncomplicated. This bag fits directly into that wardrobe.
Black leather against a cream sweater. Black trousers and a white shirt. Dark denim and loafers. A blazer. A trench. Eventually, a long wool coat. It works with all of it.
And because the design isn’t tied to a particularly obvious trend, I don’t look at it and think fall 2026. I look at it and think I’ll still be carrying it for several falls.
The Details I Appreciate
Moss offers the tote with different top and pocket configurations, including an open, button, or zipper top and the option to add a front pocket.
Mine has the front pocket, which is one of those details that sounds insignificant until you actually start using a bag. I don’t want to conduct an archaeological dig every time I need something quickly.
The brass hardware also adds just enough warmth to the black leather. It’s subtle rather than decorative, which is exactly right for this bag.
Most importantly, the leather feels like leather. Moss describes it as full-grain, with a smooth-to-pebbled texture and a soft-to-medium temper. This isn’t a bag whose appeal depends on keeping it pristine. I actually think it will become better-looking as it gets used.

What I love: The full-grain leather, understated design, generous proportions, front pocket, and lack of conspicuous branding.
Would I carry it myself? I already am.
