FemFounder Tested: The Barefoot Shoe We’d Actually Wear

Vivobarefoot turned the Mary Jane into a barefoot shoe. I wore the Motus Studio Ballet to see whether function and fashion could finally occupy the same pair of flats.

Barefoot shoes have never been something we particularly associated with fashion. Healthy feet? Natural movement? Sensible footwear? Certainly. Something we’d deliberately build an outfit around? Less so.

Then the Vivobarefoot Motus Studio Ballet arrived.

It takes the familiar Mary Jane, a shoe that has moved firmly back into the fashion conversation, and strips away most of what we expect from conventional footwear. The result is a ballet-inspired flat designed around barefoot movement, with a flexible construction, elastic strap, and extremely thin sole.

And surprisingly, it works.

First: They Don’t Really Look Like “Barefoot Shoes”

That matters. The Motus Studio Ballet has a simple, almost slightly unexpected silhouette. It has a rounded ballet-flat shape, an elastic Mary Jane strap across the foot, and a softly gathered heel.

Mine came in the pale neutral Sand color. I paired them with black leggings, so they looked less like performance footwear and more like the slightly unusual flat you’d spot on someone whose outfit you want to look at twice.

There’s nothing fancy about them. That’s part of the appeal.

Then You Walk in Them

This is where things get interesting.

Vivobarefoot designed the Motus Studio outsole to be extremely thin and flexible. The sole is 2.5 mm; there’s no conventional insole, and the shoe uses a leather footbed.  The difference from a conventional ballet flat is noticeable.

You can feel the floor beneath you. Your foot bends. Your toes aren’t being held rigidly in place by a thick sole. That sensation may be the biggest adjustment if your normal shoe wardrobe consists of cushioned sneakers, structured boots, and conventional flats. It’s not trying to make you forget there’s a ground underneath you.

Quite the opposite.

The Mary Jane, Simplified

This is probably my favorite part. Mary Janes can veer very schoolgirl, very prim, or very trend-driven. These don’t.

The elastic strap and minimal construction make them feel sportier and a little more modern. Vivobarefoot uses Wild Hide leather for the upper and lining, while the textured rubber-based outsole is designed to bend and grip as the foot moves. The shoe weighs 188 grams in a women’s US 7. They’re currently listed at $160 in the U.S., and Vivobarefoot says the style fits true to size.

How I Wore Them

Not with a complicated outfit. That’s the point. Black leggings, a black tee, and an oversized knit. Straight-leg trousers and a white shirt. Dark denim and a blazer. A long black dress. A trench when the weather turns. And we’d absolutely put them in a carry-on. They occupy very little visual space in an outfit, yet they’re interesting enough that they don’t feel like the shoes you begrudgingly change into when your “real” shoes start hurting.

Our photograph may actually capture the appeal best: they look like shoes being lived in, not shoes being displayed. That’s becoming an important distinction for FemFounder Tested.

The FemFounder Verdict

FF TESTED — YES.

What we like: The unexpectedly cool Mary Jane silhouette, flexible construction, neutral color, and the fact that they don’t scream “functional footwear.”

Best for: Everyday running around, travel, casual workdays, and women intrigued by barefoot footwear who still care very much about what their shoes look like.

Worth knowing: The ultra-thin sole feels intentionally different from conventional cushioned footwear.

Would we wear them again? We already are.

The Motus Studio Ballet isn’t trying to disguise a conventional ballet flat as something more comfortable.

Vivobarefoot did something more interesting: it took its barefoot philosophy and made it look like a shoe we’d choose even if nobody had explained the technology first.

For us, that’s what got them into the edit.
