À La Glow, Evea, and Ballou Family Apothecary are taking very different approaches to beauty. The thing they have in common? Making a case for a smaller, better bathroom shelf.
Something odd happens with beauty products. They multiply and multiply.
One moisturizer becomes a moisturizer, serum, oil, eye cream, mask, and overnight treatment. The edge of the bathroom counter disappears. The medicine cabinet becomes a minor storage problem. And somehow, despite owning more, we don’t necessarily enjoy our routines any more than we did before.
So we’ve started asking a different question at FemFounder.
What actually deserves the space?
For this edition of FemFounder Tested, three brands landed on our bathroom counter: À La Glow, Evea, and Ballou Family Apothecary.
They don’t look alike. They don’t sell the same philosophy. And their formulas occupy different places in a beauty routine. But after living with them for about a month, we noticed a common thread. Each, in its own way, makes less feel luxurious. Not deprivation. Not another minimalist aesthetic constructed for Instagram.
Just fewer products that do something useful, feel wonderful to use, and make the routine itself a little better.
That’s a beauty philosophy we can get behind.
À La Glow: The Multitasker
À La Glow might be the most literal expression of the idea.
The brand is openly skeptical of complicated skincare routines, promoting concentrated formulas and a two-to-three-step approach rather than a bathroom shelf filled with products. Its Luscious Makeup Remover & Moisture Mask fits that philosophy particularly well: it cleanses and removes makeup while also working as a hydrating moisture mask. And that’s why we like it.
There’s something incredibly appealing about opening one beautiful jar at the end of the day instead of conducting a small chemistry experiment over the bathroom sink.
Luscious has substance to it. It’s tactile. The jewel-toned jar feels appropriately indulgent. Paired with the brand’s Lip Rescue, it creates the kind of abbreviated evening routine we’re increasingly interested in: take everything off, put moisture back, take care of your lips, done. À La Glow describes Lip Rescue as a deeply nourishing balm intended to soften and protect dry lips. Simple doesn’t have to mean austere.
Sometimes it just means knowing when enough is enough.
FF VERDICT: YES.
We’d keep it for: Nights when a lengthy skincare routine just isn't happening.
À La Glow?
Evea: The One Serious Moisturizer
If À La Glow is about multitasking, Evea makes the case for investing in one hardworking moisturizer.
Its Microalgae Gold Radiance Firm + Lift is built around the brand’s proprietary Microalgae-7 extract and combines it with ingredients including astaxanthin, omega oils, squalene and colloidal gold. Evea positions the formula around intensive hydration, improved tone and elasticity, smoothing and firming support. The cream is designed for day or night use.
There is plenty of science to explore there. But FemFounder Tested isn’t a chemistry exam.
What interests us is the proposition: one substantial cream that earns its position in the routine. The texture is meant to be silky rather than cumbersome or heavy and greasy, and the gold-and-white bottle looks rather fabulous against a white bathroom counter, which, while hardly a scientific measure of efficacy, does matter when we’re talking about the pleasure of using something every day.
Beauty should work.
We also think it’s allowed to be beautiful.
FF VERDICT: YES.
We’d keep it for: The person who would rather buy one serious moisturizer than assemble an entire regimen.
Evea Skincare?
Ballou Family Apothecary: The Ritual
Then we have Ballou Family Apothecary, which takes us somewhere slightly different. Because sometimes what we want from beauty isn’t another active. We want the ritual.
The combination we’ve been trying includes the brand’sWhipped Magnesium Butter in Lavender, Organic Lavender Soy Candle, and Bakuchiol Renewal Elixir. Together, they make considerably more sense than they might separately.
The Renewal Elixir is a plant-based facial formula built around bakuchiol alongside ingredients including rosehip, calendula, chamomile, green tea and hibiscus. Ballou positions it as a gentler approach to supporting smoother, radiant-looking skin. Then beauty moves beyond the face.
The brand’s lavender magnesium butter combines magnesium chloride with plant oils and butters and is intended to be massaged onto the body as part of an evening wind-down routine.
Add the lavender candle, and you'll understand why these products made our edit together. It’s not about adding three more things to a checklist. It’s about making ten ordinary minutes at home feel better.
Light the candle. Put the phone somewhere else. Apply the elixir. Massage in the butter.
That’s it.
And perhaps that is the particular luxury Ballou understands: the product isn’t always the point. Sometimes the feeling around it is.
FF VERDICT: YES.
We’d keep it for: Turning the end of an ordinary workday into an actual enjoyable evening.
Ballou Family Apothecary?
The New Beauty Shelf
Three brands. Three very different approaches.
À La Glow asks whether one product could replace several.
Evea asks whether one sophisticated moisturizer could anchor the routine.
Ballou Family Apothecary reminds us that sometimes the best part of beauty isn’t another promised transformation at all. It’s the ritual of taking care of yourself.
And that’s the thread we’re taking forward with FemFounder Tested.
We’re not interested in accumulating products to produce enormous roundups. We don’t need 37 moisturizers to tell you about. We don’t need to call every launch a must-have. We want to find the things we’d be slightly annoyed to discover empty—the jar we reach for, the moisturizer that stays out, and the candle we actually burn instead of saving.
The product that moves from “I’m testing this” to “I use this.” That’s a considerably higher bar. And it’s exactly what Tried. Considered. Worth It. should mean.
À La Glow. Evea. Ballou Family Apothecary.
Three very different beauty brands. Three reasons we may finally be ready to clear off the bathroom counter.
