"Persistence is the only difference between the business that makes it and the business that flops" with Crissy Fishbane

Crissy Fishbane is the co-founder of HER Health Collective, an organization dedicated to improving postpartum care for women in the United States, where maternal outcomes are often ranked last compared to other developed nations. Crissy is passionate about bringing together experts from a variety of fields to foster collaboration across disparate industries and move postpartum care and women’s health forward. HER Health Collective offers a fun and supportive community for moms where they can create authentic relationships with other women while also providing educational opportunities around topics such as postpartum depression, racial inequality, avoiding burnout, and overcoming workplace barriers.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

A helper by nature, I began as a high school psychology teacher. When I made the difficult decision to leave the classroom I knew I still wanted to do something that would have an impact, but I didn’t know where to begin. I opted to pursue my passion for health and wellness and became a Certified Therapeutic Exercise Specialist, Personal Trainer, and Wellness Coach specializing in postpartum care.

In 2019 my business partner, Cindi Michaelson and I founded HER Health Collective in response to the huge need we saw among our postpartum clients who were being grossly underserved by the current model of care.

What inspired you to start your business?

Motherhood rocked me to my core. In 2017 I gave birth to my beautiful daughter, who would forever change my world. In that early postpartum period, my mind and body were overcome by severe postpartum anxiety. The meager one-page intake form given at my 6-week postpartum check-up with my OBGYN failed to get me the support I so desperately needed.

Through my work as a Therapeutic Exercise Specialist and Wellness Coach specializing in postpartum care, I interacted with dozens of moms every week. It is through those interactions that I quickly discovered I was far from alone in my postpartum experience.

Once a child is born, care for the mother comes to a screeching halt. This is the exact period of life in which most women will face some of their biggest health and life challenges. This gap in care is a serious flaw in our healthcare system. When you look at postpartum care in other nations, both formal and informal, women have access to a far more comprehensive system of care. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United States ranks last in terms of family-friendly policies.

I have never before felt so called to do something. I knew women were being underserved by our current system of care. I knew women were falling under the radar, being forced to seek out answers on their own, navigating a disparate system of care, and feeling frustrated at not knowing where to turn. I saw a need for more support and I set out to make it happen.

In 2019 I was lucky enough to meet Cindi Michaelson, who would become a treasured friend and my business partner. Cindi and I share the same views on postpartum care and both have a deep passion for supporting mothers. Together we envisioned a cohesive system that supports women through their entire journey of motherhood. We have been working tirelessly to bring that vision to life and I couldn’t imagine building this business with anyone else by my side.

Where is your business based?

We are based out of Raleigh, North Carolina, but many of our events are online and welcome mothers from countries all over the world. We are also in the planning phases of rolling out chapters in other cities across the United States.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

HER Health Collective began in countless coffee shops over numerous long and impassioned brainstorming sessions between me and Cindi. We knew we wanted to connect moms with other moms, while also connecting them with vetted and trusted experts. After countless conversations with past clients and mom friends, we felt we had a firm grasp of what our target market wanted and needed.

We immediately began planning a soft launch event while simultaneously setting up the back-end of the business. This was a lot of moving parts all at once and I don’t necessarily recommend it, but this was a great way for us to begin building our connections and is what launched us into the spotlight within our community.  Once the ball was rolling, HER Health Collective took on a life of it’s own. People reached out to us looking to get involved and suddenly we were successfully juggling multiple initiatives and campaigns.  The next stage involved welcoming members and really building up HER Circle, our supportive community for moms while simultaneously building out our expert network. Our moms are why we do what we do and we always return to our committment to support and lift them up in every way we can.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Word of mouth has been huge for us. We put a lot of energy into making sure our moms always feel welcome, are making authentic connections, and feel well cared for. Our moms appreciate that care and attention and they in turn tell their friends about us. We’ve also had great partnerships with local businesses and experts in the community and have been featured in various publications and local news segments which have helped get the word out.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

We’ve bootstrapped the entire business ourselves which means we have often found ourselves needing to learn how to do things that fall outside of our wheelhouse. We took the time and learned what we needed to, but that often meant steps took longer than anticipated and involved a lot of frustration along the way. It has been essential having a trusted partner to navigate these challenges with. We kept a long-term mentality and relied on each other, dividing and conquering each new piece of the puzzle. Now we have each grown our areas of expertise and are excited to bring on new challenges.

How do you stay focused?

I find that my passion for this work makes it easy for me to stay focused. I live and breathe our mission, so the hard part for me is actually turning my focus off to be fully present in other areas of my life. I do this by making sure I strategically schedule my work day around the times I know I am most productive, batching activities as much as possible, pausing to take several short walks or breaks in nature every day, and planning a mini-getaway every couple of months to reset. This is what allows me to keep my passion going strong, which in turn makes it easy to stay focused on our mission.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I discovered I needed to stop paying attention to our competition. I found I was getting bogged down with imposter syndrome and comparing our progress with everyone else’s. When I noticed a competitor launching a project similar to ours it would leave me with a defeatist attitude for days on end. Now I keep a loose pulse on our competition with periodic social media check-ins, but I strive to keep my focus solely on our mission and serving our moms.

In the end, this is likely what differentiates us. When you get sucked into constantly watching what the competition is doing it forces you into a kind of dance with them where you are each trying to one-up each other. By setting them out of my mind I am better able to unleash my creativity and think outside of the box. Rather than focusing on what the competition is doing I can better focus on serving our moms in the best way possible, and in the way only we can.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Word of mouth and strategic partnerships have been our most effective marketing strategies. We rely on happy members sharing about their experience with friends. We are also growing our social media presence and have gained some traction there as well.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Do not give up. Persistence is the only difference between the business that makes it and the business that flops. Dedication to your cause, and showing up day after day, are what will carry you through to the finish line. We all have projects or initiatives that don’t pan out. The entreprenerus that are successful look at those failures as learning opportunities and keep working toward their ultimate goal. Build flexibility into the how of your business, while always staying true to your why.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

Libby is my favorite app at the moment. It is provided through our local public library and let’s me check out audiobooks and magazines for free right to my phone. It has been a lifesaver for my sanity in 2020 and I’ve greatly enjoyed all the audiobooks I’ve started listening to on my daily walks or while running errands.

My favorite blog is Marie Forleo. She always seems to provide the message I need to hear. It is inspiring on a professional and personal level and has offered so much great advice for launching and running a business.

A recent favorite book is Simon Sinek’s Start With Why. This book inspired me and helped formalize our business model. It has been a source of great power to examine the merit of every business effort by simply starting with how it contributes to our why. I created our own Golden Circle after reading his explanation of the concept and now look at it every day as a reminder of what the purpose of HER Health Collective really is.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

Currently, my two favorite business tools are Canva and Later. Social media is so important to our business and our ultimate growth strategy, but it is also the one piece of our business that winds up taking a huge toll on my personal life if I let it. Canva lets us design appealing content even with no design background. Later allows us to curate our social platforms in the way we want while still setting limits around how long we spend on the various platforms each day.

Who is your business role model? Why?

Marie Forleo. I appreciate her “everything is figureoutable” approach to business and life. I love that she has found a way to create a successful business while never losing sight of her desire to bring about positive change for others. That is what we need more of in this world and I always look forward to the information and resources she puts out to her community.

How do you balance work and life?
I’ve come to accept that there is no true balancing of work and life. At any moment home life, mothering, and personal responsibilities may take precedence and at others, it may be work that takes the front seat. I have learned to instead focus on how I can integrate my work and home life together in a way that meets my core needs. I have spent a lot of time doing value work and determining what is truly important to me. Those are the things I make non-negotiable. I’ve determined what time of day I work best and what time of day I need to be present with my daughter. No two days ever really look the same in our house, but I like that.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

Long walks around my neighborhood listening to a podcast or audiobook have become my favorite part of the day. I try to do it early in the morning and right after lunch. It’s a great way to step away from my desk, ignore emails and social media for a bit, and just take a moment to let my brain dive into something completely unrelated to whatever it is I’m working on. I always come back in a better mood and feeling refreshed and ready to dive back into my projects.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

We are currently going through nominations for our 2021 expert panel and conducting interviews in order to bring together a well-rounded panel of rockstar women’s health, mental health, and parenting experts. We are also in the planning phase of our soon-to-be-launched podcast which will be another great way for moms to learn from experts and access trusted resources.

"Recognize your weaknesses and either hire support in those areas or get the necessary education and training to be competent at it for yourself" with Amber Stevens

Amber Stevens

Amber Stevens is your guide to living a boundless life, free of physical and emotional pain. Over the past decade, she has used her skills in massage therapy and mindful-eating strategies to help others overcome emotional eating and improve overall vigor for life. She believes in the body and mind’s natural ability to heal – if given the right tools and support. She is the author of Food, Feelings, and Freedom: The End to Emotional Eating and Founder of Amber Stevens, LLC.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

For over 12 years, I have owned and operated a private practice Massage Therapy and Health Coaching business in Arvada. It’s been quite a journey getting to this point. I graduated from CSU with a degree in Journalism and found myself working in a top news center, but I wasn’t happy. I switched careers to marketing and worked in design firms, but still, I felt a calling to something bigger. I was very health-conscious and naturally helped others to feel better in their bodies. I saw a magazine that talked about the medical benefits of massage – specifically for whitewater kayakers (which I was at the time). That was it – I was hooked and knew that I had a career in the wellness industry.

What inspired you to start your business?

I felt my passion for health and wellness growing and knew that I could help others. My previous work experience had given me the tools in business and marketing, but I wanted to do it on my own schedule and in my own way. I felt confident in launching my own business to support others on their journey while allowing for creativity in my work and flexibility in my life. I knew my life experience had given me the understanding to work closely with others and I craved the opportunity to challenge myself in this way.

Where is your business based?

Arvada, Colorado and Virtually

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I graduated from massage therapy school and immediately rented a room in a suite with another massage therapist. I was working one day a week, growing my client base, while still working full time. It was a slow process and I realized, even with my background in marketing, that I didn’t really know how to reach potential clients. This was a whole new kind of marketing…for myself!

I soon started working in a yoga center which naturally brought more people to me…and then it closed! But that was fine – I was four months pregnant and decided that I should take a break. When I decided to reopen, I rented an office with a Chiropractor and I put energy into networking. That’s when my practice started to grow; by using referrals from respected and established health practitioners. I soon realized that massage is hard on my body and I needed a complimentary service in my practice. That’s when I pursued my development as a health coach becoming certified through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and later becoming a Mindful-Based Eating instructor. To summarize my steps – I set an intention, gained the appropriate education/training, made a plan, and then took action!

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

I’m a people person, so participating in networking groups, vending events, and speaking has had the biggest impact on awareness. Authoring my book (Food, Feelings, and Freedom: The End to Emotional Eating) also created a new way of reaching people and offers support beyond one-to-one coaching. People I’ve never met are reading my book and know me!

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My Mindset. Period. There are always struggles and uncertainties in business. First, my worry was having enough clients to pay the bills. The second was the anxiety about working too much and not being there for my family. The third was actually pushing against success itself (could I handle it). But through it all, the only tool that has helped keep me steady is a positive mindset and a deep belief that the world needs, and wants, what I offer, and who I am. The mindset that abundance is the natural state of being and if I align with an abundance mindset, then all is possible. And I have found that belief to be proven to me over and over again.

How do you stay focused?

I am fond of checklists! I write all my to-dos out for the day and the week and organize them by priority. I love the feeling of marking something off the list! I also practice meditation every day either in a calm, centering space connecting with my breath, or out in nature for a peaceful walk. Both the checklist and a centered mind and body keeps me focused.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

It’s rare to find a practitioner with the knowledge of both the body structures (muscles, bones, movement) and the importance of and use of nutrition for overall health. I can help my clients understand how to relieve pain physically and emotionally through massage, stretching, self-care, nutrition, and mindfulness. My practice is truly a mind/body/gut connection resulting in improvement in the whole health strategy. I can work with my clients from an outward-in approach with massage along with an inward-out approach through nutrition.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Speaking and networking. The more I can talk directly with people and allow my passion to shine, the more people are drawn to working with me. However, I’ve had to learn how to move from simply educating my potential clients, to inspiring them. I love sharing all my knowledge, but people need to feel compelled to take action. They do that by connecting with the heart. So now all my marketing materials, talks, and “elevator speeches” are aimed at the heart so people can feel me more than just hear me.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Jump in there and just start. It’s never perfect and the landscape of business is always shifting. It’s like the staircases in Hogwarts! But don’t wish yourself into success. Recognize your weaknesses and either hire support in those areas or get the necessary education and training to be competent at it for yourself. Being an entrepreneur is super hard work; some days will knock you down; others will lift you up. Be sure to set goals and reward yourself when you reach them. The best advice, however – holds your vision. Not just the “I want a 6-figure business in two years” type of vision. Hold the vision that is closest to your heart – why does your heart want a successful business in your field? My vision – to be a wellness leader in my community removing the health struggles that invade so many lives! I refer to this vision every day and my path becomes clearer, showing me the steps to take towards fulfilling that vision.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

Playing Big by Tara Mohr is a favorite book. It inspires me to keep going, unapologetically, and feel confident as a woman business owner. For a blog, I tend to follow MindBodyGreen as those posts provide some interesting and varied insights into all things wellness. (I also like my own blog on my site!) I’m not much of a techy person so I have very few apps, but I do enjoy Brain.FM which plays music designed to impact the brain to achieve different goals. When I want to focus on my work, I use the Focus setting, but I enjoy it for meditation as well, especially if I am in a noisy environment and trying to drown out all the sounds.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

I’m still navigating all the tools and am pretty old-school in many ways. I’ve enjoyed Mailchimp for communications and Calendly for online scheduling. Both are free to start and are super simple to use. I’m currently looking into an inclusive system that manages communications, social media, and tracking all in one place. That will be the next level of business growth.

Who is your business role model? Why?

I’ve admired Andrea Beaman for some time now. She is a health educator, chef, author, and speaker. She’s highly successful but extremely relatable and approachable. I feel like I could hang out with her at lunch just as easily as learning a great deal of business savvy from her! She started small, like me, and has grown greatly over the years, but always remains true to her roots and her vision of support for others.

What is your beauty routine? What are some of your favorite products?

I’m very simple in my routine. I wash with a gentle cleanser, then tone and moisturize. I use a colored sunscreen powder base, a little blush, and maybe some mascara. Done! I make my own skin-care products, but I use Alima Pure and Juice Beauty for makeup.

How do you balance work and life?

I am married and have two young boys to raise, along with growing a business. Work/life balance is more like work/life management. It adjusts every day. Some days are more work; others are more family. But I’m careful to set boundaries. Work is done by 7p every night to dedicate my attention to my family. Saturdays are a family day that I hold sacred. I’m grateful to have a supportive husband who shares the load and does as much as I do to make work/life do-able and still enjoyable. When I start to feel like “this is not fun”, then I know I need an adjustment with my work or my life balance. You should enjoy what you do and whom you do it with!

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

Going for a walk in nature. I always feel refreshed and more creative after I spend some timing moving and taking in the beautiful scenery. In the spring and summer, I love to get out in the garden too; even better if I can make a colorful meal from freshly picked veggies!

What do you have planned for the next six months?

I’m launching an online program for breaking free from unbalanced and emotional eating. This is a nice companion to my book and an easily accessible way to experience transformative coaching on your own schedule.

"Do what you love! If you love doing something it won’t feel like work" with Melanie Hetzer

Melanie Hetzer is an entrepreneur and digital nomad. Together with her co-founder she founded the eHealth platform Cora Health in 2016. Today, Cora Health helps thousands of blood pressure patients to improve their condition and live a heart-healthy life.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

I come from a small town in northern Austria and studied Marketing in Vienna. However, it was my dream to study abroad. And that’s how it all started. I did my second Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship at Lund University in Sweden and there I met my co-founder Josef.

What inspired you to start your business?

Every fourth adult in Europe has high blood pressure. And what’s worse, every eighth dies from one of its secondary diseases such as stroke or heart attack. We became aware of this issue as members of our families were diagnosed with hypertension. We were appalled how little attention and care patients received to treat their condition. This is when we decided to start Cora Health.

Where is your business based?

Our company is based in Tallinn, Estonia. However, we are a remote team spread across different countries.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

We started off by doing lots of market research. We interviewed patients and doctors to find out more about their wants and needs. As a second step we analysed all the information we got and then started to develop our product. Until now, user feedback plays a key role in our product development.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

We recognised that many patients inform themselves on their condition on the Internet. By providing patients answers to their concerns through our online heart health guide, we raise awareness for our product.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

As startup founders we face different kinds of challenges every day, from development to HR. However, one of the biggest challenges is that hypertension itself isn’t a “sexy topic” and does not get much attention in public debates.

How do you stay focused?

In today’s age getting distracted is as easy as never before. That’s why we have weekly stand ups where we plan our tasks for the upcoming week. By doing that we can assure that we’re working towards the same goal and that everyone’s on track.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

If you go on the App Store, you’ll find various blood pressure apps. However, all of them focus on tracking and none of them aims to improve the users’ condition. Cora Health is the only app that supports patient empowerment, providing users with a personalised training plan.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

We want to be present where patients need us. Thus, we started our online health guide and recently our YouTube channel, where we provide patients with valuable information on the topic of heart health.

What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Two things: First, do what you love! If you love doing something it won’t feel like work. And second, have stamina! Founding a startup is like a roller coaster. There are ups and downs, but don’t give up.

What’s your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

That’s an easy one! Of course, my favourite app is the app I spend most time on – Cora Health. But other than that, I like Instagram as a source of inspiration for new travel destinations.

My favourite blog is Sommertage, an Austrian travel blog which encouraged me to start my own blog (digitalenomadin.at) about traveling and life as a digital nomad.

I don’t really have a favourite book, but I like reading nonfiction books to develop my skills.

What’s your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

I really like the Airtable, a planning tool we’re using for various things. It offers so many different options and it also provides users with useful templates for content planning, outreach etc.

Who is your business role model? Why?

To be honest, I don’t really have a role model. I admire people dare to follow their dreams.

How do you balance work and life?

My work is also my biggest hobby. I love spending time on our eHealth platform Cora Health or my blog Digitale Nomadin. But if I need a break from working, I like spending time with my family and friends.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

Nature! In summer, I love to cycle to the sea and go for a swim. For me that’s the best way to relax.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

Our goal is to improve the heart health of millions of patients. In order to realize that, we plan to expand our presence on the iPad in the near future.
