What inspired you to start your business?

I was inspired to leave the 9-5 lifestyle because it just wasn’t working for me anymore. Every time I would get to my desk, I would feel a little piece of me die inside. I really didn’t want to be working for someone else’s dream anymore.

Where is your business based?

Primarily New York City but I travel worldwide for clients.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

The beauty industry can be tough and can feel intimidating especially with the makeup artist market being oversaturated and everyone so talented. I started by volunteering my time at NYU Film school so I can gain experience of doing makeup and hair for movies as well as building a network. At the time I was still working a full-time job I wasn’t happy with so I joined meet-up groups, went to brand events, and would advertise my services on Groupon.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Word of mouth and assisting another artist who is working the jobs I aspire to book.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

One of my biggest challenges has been learning myself and really sitting with my own discomfort and accepting it. Doing the shadow work is never easy but I felt it was necessary in order to move forward in my life with full and unconditional acceptance of myself and my previous choices.

How do you stay focused?

I stay focused by keeping my eye on the prize. I really try to step back and look at the bigger picture. I also have an incredible group of supportive people in my life who really help keep me going.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I don’t compete! I think we all offer our own unique insight and there is room for all of us to shine.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Offering my assistant service to other disciplines in the beauty industry. I not only do makeup and facials for my own clients, but I help other artists with their clients as well which has given me in a sense an assistant business at the same time.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Just keep going! I think a lot of the time we hold ourselves back because we either feel unworthy or we are afraid we may fail but there is so much power in trusting ourselves!! When you believe you can have it, you’ll be surprised by how fast the opportunities will come. What you are seeking is seeking you.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

My favorite book is the Gradual Awakening by Stephen Levine. Published in the ’80s, this book was given to me about 10 years ago by a friend who saw I was lost in my life. It’s a book for deep healing and growth. It’s how I started my mediation practice and cravings for more out of my life.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

Networking and meeting new people who are like-minded. Throwing yourself into focus groups in your niche. In the beauty business word of mouth and referral are huge so being out there and present and supportive in the community has led to greater opportunities for me. A project may not line up this week or next month but 3-6 months down the line it might.

Who is your business role model? Why?

I don’t focus on one person per se. I look up to all the successful business owners out there who have found their way of carving out their path and finding the ways to make it sustainable and lucrative.

How do you balance work and life?

This is not always easy because when I’m working on something, I’m really excited about I tend to go all in and put the blinders on knowing full well this choice is not doing right by myself. Recently with the pandemic, over the past 5 months, I’ve really slowed down and started living every day for that day as it is. Using discretion and following my intuition when it’s telling me to not always push. Rest, moderation, and allowing myself to really flow with the ebbs and flows in life without feeling guilty.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

Nurturing myself! Meditation, going walking in nature, and being on the beach.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

In the next 6 months professionally I’ll be diving further into my esthetics practice and building a presence in the bridal beauty market as well as more on-camera beauty. Personally, I will be enjoying the moment and allowing the path to unfold while looking for a new home in a new city and exploring vegan philanthropy, and spending time with animals at the sanctuary.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

I have a BFA in Drama from NYU and needed a job - so I got a holiday sales gig at Macy’s - they put me at the Prescriptives counter. I rarely wore makeup and didn’t know anything about it, but I LOVED learning about products, solving the puzzle of what a client needed, meeting folks from all over the world, and hustling! An artist/entrepreneur was born!

What inspired you to start your business?

Through my auditioning and acting, I knew that I could work for myself successfully. I was responsible and organized in my acting pursuits, and did not need the structure of an office environment to do my work. Later, I worked in offices for years to develop business skills, so I know that side (and it has its benefits) but I do not need it to get my work done. Actually, working in offices was so beneficial to me, because it inspired me to start my business and be my own boss!

Where is your business based?

We are based in NYC, and can travel locally, regionally, and internationally. Have tools, will travel!

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

A dear friend, who is a graphic designer, created a logo for me. Another friend had heard of a website platform for artists, so I gathered up whatever images I had and created a website (way before SquareSpace was created). Printed up a card, emailed everyone I know with the news that I was going out on my own, and that was my start!

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Everything is networking! Whether it’s meeting colleagues at an event and following up with a 1-1 coffee date, or making sure that all of your clients are thrilled with their service and following up for a review, every impression is a networking opportunity.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenges have always been technology! I’m great with my hands and my head, and machines have been a roadblock. So, iPhone/computer/printer/websites/database. Now I’m smart enough to ask my question to YouTube and see if I can find a video on how to solve my problem. I also have an off-site tech guy who I pay to help me solve computer issues. My business is fast-paced and I cannot be slowed down by a less-than-optimized system. Therefore, I try not to be too ambitious with machines and pay people to help me!

How do you stay focused?

When you work for yourself, live by yourself, and are solely responsible for paying your own bills, it’s really easy to stay focused! If I don’t hustle, I don’t pay rent and save for retirement. Simple equation. Also, I have some easy tricks: unpack/clean/repack my kit every time I come home from a job; block out a few hours to get deep work done when I’m not with a client; optimize my lifestyle for simplicity, like eating and dressing simply.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

Me! My taste, my values, my hand - clients are buying me. Also, we deliver GREAT services.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Doing makeup on or near taste-makers or decision-makers, so they can experience my work or see how others experience it in real-time. Once I get my hands on someone’s face, they are mine!

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Think really hard about what talents you have to offer, and do that, only that, and do it extremely well. Don’t veer from it. Once you know what you want to offer, think about your values, what you’re willing to sacrifice, what you want to share of yourself to make the world a better, more beautiful, more just, etc place for everyone. Then, take action steps that set you up for long-term success.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

I listen to a lot of podcasts because I’m always running around the city and crave stories, news, and info. Walking, biking, riding the train or bus, I’m always on the move. For podcasts, I enjoy What’s The Tee with RuPaul and Michelle Visage; Fresh Air, Stay Tuned with Preet Bharara, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me, and WTF with Marc Maron. My nerdy side comes out on podcasts and when I listen to NPR all day.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

I do love an Excel spreadsheet! Since I’m a visual person, it helps me see what I’m thinking about, and get sorted. Just started using Dubsado for my bookings, and that could be helpful (once I’ve learned more).

Who is your business role model? Why?

I don’t really have one, but my mentor is my friend David, who has been cutting my hair for over 20 years. We are close and he has been instrumental in my success, especially with my fashion and commercial work. He is far more experienced than I and has finely attuned tastes, so I trust him.

How do you balance work and life?

Who says I do? Hahaha. A few years into my business, I realized what my natural calendar break times are in the year, and I schedule those as my vacation times. This has been a wonderful opportunity to plan trips to warm and exotic locations, and give myself something to look forward to!

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

My boyfriend and his dog live in NJ, so most Saturday nights after I finish work, he picks me up at the train in NJ and we have a low-key dinner and maybe a movie with the pooch. On Sunday, we do suburban things, like walk the dog, visit the farmer’s market and a big box store for errands, and read the NY Times. Other than that, I love to watch YouTube: makeup tutorials, all things Drag Race, comedy, and news bits. Also, I’m a big reader, so I read before bed.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

At this time, it’s hard to plan 6 months ahead because of the global pandemic, but I do plan to finish the relaunch of my second website, shoot more makeup videos and build my affiliate sales platform, and spread the love with my Virtual Makeup Lessons.

Q&A with Makeup Artist, Angel Johnson

Angel Johnson is founder of Memphis Makeup Artists, INC (memphismakeup.com). Her love for beauty goes back to high school where she first wanted to pursue a career in cosmetology. However, life led her down a different career path as a corporate accountant. In February of 2018, she managed to bridge her corporate world and her first love with the launch of Memphis Makeup Artists, INC.

Angel-Johnson

Can you tell our readers about your background?

Yes. I am affectionately known as Angel, the Makeup Artist. I have been a freelance makeup artist in Memphis, TN for the past 4 years. I mostly travel to locations doing makeup for weddings, films, and events. I love it! But that’s my weekend job. I am also a Financial Consultant M-F. I have been a corporate accountant for the past 13 years but I don’t have a passion for it. I’m currently on a mission to leave corporate America for good.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always had a passion beauty and fashion. I became a freelance artist after doing a relative’s makeup for prom. I enjoyed it a lot! Memphis Makeup Artists was born out of a need to streamline the administrative work so I could focus more on doing what I love…making women look and feel beautiful.

Where is your business based?

My business is based in Memphis, TN but our service area is worldwide.

Angel at work

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I started my business in my head a couple years ago. It took lots of research and planning before I could see anything tangible. Makeup artistry is a booming career for freelancers with a lot of ambiguity still. And Memphis did not have anything that looked like a glam team. Once I decided what I wanted it to look like, I registered with the state as a corporation, obtained my business license, and opened a bank account.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Social media. Plain and simple. Beauty brands are getting so much traction via social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. I followed suit. And it works. Customers enjoy engaging and interfacing with brands. It builds trust and that’s very important as a makeup artist.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge has been wearing too many hats. It causes burn out quickly. I would recommend outsourcing whatever you can as fast as you can. My work experience aided me in building a backend office that is streamlined from beginning-to-end due to systems integrations. But I had to quickly pick up marketing and sales, customer service, and human resource skills. Get help!

How do you stay focused?

I stay focused by keeping long-term visions for my business and my personal life front and center. I am an advocate of vision boards, post its, or whatever is needed to keep goals in your face so that you don’t lose sight. Also, with the economic boom occurring in Memphis, there is this urgency looming over me to become a household name as quickly as possible. That motivates me to keep going.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I differentiate my business by offering something no one else in Memphis offers. I have a team of professional makeup artists with diverse skillsets and backgrounds. Being a team, we also have greater capacity and can handle large scale events in house.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

SEO. Search Engine Optimization has helped Memphis Makeup Artists gain first page listings on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. These leads, unlike social media leads, have a much higher conversion rate. Meaning they are ready to purchase!

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Be resourceful. I have utilized many free programs to help with business needs. I used a local college for market research. They provided me a report that would have cost me thousands. Utilize organizations such as SCORE, SBA, and your local chamber of commerce to help bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

My favorite app is Facebook. I can promote business, engage clients, book appointments, and keep an online portfolio of my work in one place.

My favorite blog is my own! I just started a couple weeks ago but it is another way to engage clients and increase SEO. However, I am an avid listener of the podcast/YT channel The Rich Dad Channel.

My favorite book is the Bible for it’s many lessons and wisdom.

What's your favorite business tool or resource?

My favorite business tool is Intuit QuickBooks. I can keep tabs on my financials easily. It helps me to make quick business decisions.

Who is your business role model? Why?

My most notable business role model would my mentor and fellow makeup artist Nikki Chanel. She is a full-time professional and celebrity makeup artist. She also trains and develops other artists. I aspire to that. My most influential business role model is a former employer. There I learned the power of efficient systems and setting standard operations and how that helps to provide a great product.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

Because we are a startup having just launched in February, I am still primarily focusing on building the brand and the business. I will focus heavily on building working capital, marketing and marketing materials, and nurturing relationships. All of those will be relied upon heavily in 2019. I am currently working my final contract as an accountant which ends January 2019. And I will say goodbye to my security blanket.
